A Farmington chiropractor and Bonne Terre licensed massage therapist were the guest speakers at the Desloge Chamber of Commerce monthly luncheon held Tuesday at city hall.

Sarah Stark of Body Focus Massage Therapy, 60 Nesbit Drive Suite D in Bonne Terre; and Sarah LaBrot, DC, of Elite Adaptations, 114 E. Liberty St. in Farmington, shared health and wellness tips that people can use to lead healthier and more pain-free lives.

“I wanted to talk to you a little bit about the benefits of massage and how it’s more than just a luxury,” Stark said. “It can actually help you through the stresses of life. It’s just a good way to relax. It helps with chronic conditions like lower back pain, arthritis, fatigue, high blood pressure, depression and so many other things.

“The first category I work on is rehabilitative massage — which is deep tissue medical message. If people got hurt in a car accident or anything like that I can help work those areas out. I also do Swedish massage, which is more relaxation-type massage. Regardless of the reason you seek it out — as a luxury, stress relief, pain management or injury — massage therapy can be a very powerful addition to your health care regimen.”

Since graduating from school, Stark said she’d noticed the medical community had begun actively embracing massage as an integral part of hospice care and neonatal intensive units. She added that many hospitals are incorporating massage treatments in post-surgery or pain patients as part of the recovery process.

“I’m not trying to stand in front of you and say that massage can fix absolutely everything, but I do know that every client I have leaves my office tired and yawning,” she said. “They are truly relaxed. Their minds are relaxed. They’re really at rest. If I can at least do that for you as we’re all moving 100 mph every day, I’m doing my job.”

Dr. LaBrot began her presentation by asking how many employers and employees were in the room and how many sit or stand on the job all day long.

“All of these different ways of living like that adds up in our lives,” she said. “With massage therapy — I have a massage therapist in my office as well — everything [Stark] said was completely true. The thing is that, as employers and a leader of a team, you have to be very well aware that your employees have these feelings that are happening on a personal level [due to] their health — even just something as simple as asthma.

“If your employees are sitting all day, you have to make sure that their health and wellness is a priority. I believe that is very much a priority because that’s the one thing that everybody forgets to worry about for themselves. So, it’s nice to have a leader who cares. I’m sure your employees are sitting there aching and having a bad day because they don’t feel well. A lot of employers don’t pick up on that.”

LaBrot completed her portion of the program by asking volunteers to join her on the platform so she could show them several tips to help destress their bodies and minds at any time or place.

Later in the meeting, Shelley Tracy, chamber president, reminded the membership that “Karen the Connector” will be leading a seminar on how to hire and build the perfect team. It will take place from 8-9:30 a.m. May 10 at Serenity Hospice Care, 5272 Flat River Road in Farmington.

“This is a very interactive presentation,” she said. “It is perfect for employers to even bring their team to and breakfast is included.”

The cost for the Belgrade State Bank/Desloge Chamber of Commerce co-sponsored event is $10 for chamber members and $15 for non-members. To register, call chamber Executive Director Paige Faircloth at 573-431-3006 or send an email to director@deslogechamber.com.

The meeting concluded with Tracy leading new board member Reggie AuBuchon in the oath of office.

The next chamber luncheon will be held at noon June 5 at Desloge City Hall, 300 N. Lincoln Drive.
